Don’t Let AI Steal Your Whimsy

The daily onslaught of artificial intelligence slop can feel pretty discouraging. Especially in the business of writing and publishing. At once, AI has made “writing” easier and some “writers” more prolific.

But the result sort of feels like a bunch of crap in your newsfeed—prose that is flat and generic and relatively devoid of spark.

“A tale told by an idiot, full of sound and fury, signifying nothing.”

Or something like that.

While it can feel a little bleak, we think we might be on the verge of an encouraging backlash. A quiet revolution of readers and writers who don’t want the slop. A whole movement of human beings who want to read something real, something human.

Something authentic.

Sure, AI can write a blog post or can draft a business article. It can summarize a book. It can even mimic a writing style.

What it cannot do is live a life. Or weave those lived experiences into soaring tales of tragedy and triumph.

It cannot experience heartbreak. It cannot build a business from nothing. It cannot survive failure, loss, reinvention, or redemption. It cannot fall in love or have its heart broken. It cannot bury a parent. It cannot raise a child. It cannot start over at fifty. It cannot make mistakes and learn from them. It cannot earn wisdom or impart empathy.

Only people can do that.

Books readers remember most are rarely the ones with perfect prose. They're the ones that tell the truth. The gut-wrenching truth. The tragic ending. The real happily ever after. And all the messy parts in between.

We read to connect—with our hearts, with our minds, and with each other. We want stories that make us laugh, cry, remember, dream, hope, and believe.

AI bots and algorithms can’t do that for us. And if there’s a silver lining in this crossroads where we find ourselves, we believe it is that the deluge of artificially created content may ultimately elevate the value of authentic storytelling.

That’s how we feel about it, anyway.

And that’s how we operate our publishing house—in service of authenticity and the beautiful, messy humanity that comes with honest storytelling.

Think about the best books you’ve ever read—the books that still stay with you, months or even years after you read them. They stay with you because they created a bond between author and reader.

That is the sacred art of storytelling. That is the magic of writing and reading and it is at the heart of why we do what we do.

No algorithm can offer that.

At First Flight Books, we have the privilege of working with real, human authors from all walks of life. It’s a little mind-bending to even have to state that explicitly, but here we are.

So, we want to be clear. We work with real people: business leaders, entrepreneurs. Dreamers, storytellers, and people with minds and hearts full of whimsy and bravery. People who want to put something meaningful and real into the world in the hopes of connecting with others.

Are you one of those people? Someone with a drafted manuscript still tugging at the edges of your thoughts while you do your day job? Someone with a story that comes alive in your mind in your quiet moments? Someone who keeps thinking you’ll write that book “someday?”

Well, maybe someday is now. Only you can tell that story.

And we’d love to hear more about it.

Because the world doesn't need another algorithm.

It needs you.

We don't just publish books. We help connect people through stories that move us.

We want to connect with you.

Tell us more about your story here. And maybe together we can make the magic that only humans can.
